Default Skill Aquisition & Storyline

Hey all!
So I'm really digging GW, but I'm a little confused on skills. I've met two trainers and got some skills, but is that all there is? Do new skills open to us every level? Will I have to hunt for the trainers or will quests guide me to them?

I'm level 5 and the main storyline quest wants me to choose a secondary profession but I don't really want to, yet it seems the storyline quest wont go on without me doing so?

Thanks in advance if this has been beaten to death.

First off, once you choose a secondary profession you can change it back, without penalty. So you could unlock all 9 secondary professions and be able to change between them at any time, in an outpost. You also don't have to use your secondary profession if you don't want to.

You can also get skills by talking to a Hero Skill Trainer in Nightfall or the Eye of the North (and these won't cost gold). Now, if you really want to see all the skills available, you should look them up on the wiki. For example, here is the list of all Ranger skills. If you like a skill, click on it and you will see all the ways to acquire it.

It sounds like you are in the beginning area of Prophecies. You will have to take a second profession to continue, but as mentioned above, you do not have to use it. Once you get a secondary profession from Armin Saberlin, you will get a quest to talk to Sir Tydus, right next to him. When you are ready to go on, take the next quest from Sir Tydus......but you will NOT be able to return, afterwards.....so make sure you have done all you want to do in the beginning area before you accept the quest to leave.

After you leave the beginning area, you will be able to buy more skills and earn others by doing quests.

After you do the desert quests and the quest for Ascension, you will get new quests to be able to change your secondary profession. Do all the secondary profession quests so that you will be able to switch secondarys when needed.

Don't worry if you don't get something, just go on.
GW is different, 20lvl is just the beginning.
In other games you get skills at once and then you spend hours by grinding to farm/make money for a good gear.
Here you get maxed gear at 20lvl (everyone has it) and you then make your builds, get new skills, cap elite skills.
Guild Wars = Build Wars
Skill variety is the best thing on GW.

You'll get more skills, don't worry. Be patient.

Edit: Consider making a new toon in other campaign. Prophecies is super slow and boring.

GW isn't like other games where you get new skills as you level, and in turn, as you level, get new/improved skills. In GW, hypothetically, a level 1 character can access all skills; the difficulty in obtaining them is merely where they can be bought - i.e. only certain trainers in certain outposts sell certain skills. The wiki is very useful in looking up where each skill can be bought from. As other posters have already said, levels aren't really relevant in GW - you'll be at 20 in no time, and most of the game is meant to be played at 20.

Just choose one - it can even be a random choice if you like, if you don't want to ever use it; which you don't. A secondary just gives your character access to the skills from that profession, but for some profs, such as warriors, it's practically recommended that you *don't* use those skills; you can do fine without. Of course, if you think you've made a mistake, after you reach a certain point in the game, you'll be able to change freely between all of them.

prophecy's is NOT boring!!! Blasphemy!!

though it is a game that was once stand alone and limited to skills and levelingspeed of that game. later on other campaigns where added wich brings you to max level faster and unlocks things like max armor and changing second proffesion a lot sooner. The result is that 70% of prophecy's is considered easy for the people with access to the other campaigns. The people who only owns prophecy's have a challenging and enjoyable game on paper, but are seeing other people race past them at high speed wich can be frustrating for an mmo. The result is that people give little love to prophecy's. It has however the best storyline imo and I find it very enjoyable to play.

One trick I used on a few toons is that I only played prophecy's and only when I got frustrated by the lvl of difficulty I would go to e.g. kaineng or eotn to unlock something to make it easier. e.g. get max armor, or buy 2-3 skills. With a little bit of self-discipline (not over unlocking things) it turns out to be the best campaign ever.

Prophecies has a really slow leveling curve, which makes it boring for most veterans. For new players, it's perfectly fine.

You'll meet more skill trainers every few towns (and a few are hidden in explorable areas) once you leave the tutorial area. You'll know when you've left, because everything changes and you can't go back. You can also buy skills with hero skill points in Nightfall and Eye of the North, as the other poster said, if you buy those expansions, but for the most part you buy them from trainers with skill points.

Oh, and don't forget skill quests. Prophecies has a LOT of skill quests. Keep your eyes open for them, they're really helpful and they'll save you a lot of money in the long run if you earn skills for free via quests rather than buying them yourself.

Regarding secondary profession: it's not a huge deal. What profession are you? Monk is always a solid fallback pick, because you get access to a hard res (as opposed to your one-use-per-explorable area Res Signet) and condition/hex removal, if necessary.
